Shocking new footage shows car going through red light at Leicester Junction, crashing and overturning

A motorist has shared the shocking moment he hit a car after running a red light at a junction in Leicester.

The impact on Upperton Road rolled the car onto its roof, eventually coming to a stop on its side, and closed the road for several hours while emergency services freed the occupants and pulled the car to safety.

In video shot earlier this month, the driver can be seen driving down Fosse Road South, approaching the junction with Upperton Road.

As they approach the crossroads, the light turns green for them and they continue down the road.

But as they drive through the junction, a silver car can be seen driving through a red light and past the car with a running dash cam leading up to the impact.

A woman was taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary for treatment for her injuries, but police confirmed they were not life-threatening or life-threatening.

The incident happened on February 1 at around 12:40 p.m., the road reopened later at 2:30 p.m. after the car was recovered.

At the time of the incident, Subhash Varambhia, of Snutch Convenience Store, which is on the corner of Fosse Road South and Upperton Road, said: “The car was cut through crossing the junction and rolled over onto its side.

“Fortunately, I don’t think they were hurt too badly, but it was a bad fall.

“We’ve been telling the council for years that it’s too dangerous at this crossroads and more needs to be done.

“There must be at least one yellow box at the junction. Too many accidents happen here.”

It is not the first incident to occur at this junction, with an incident making national headlines after two people were killed and three injured in a crash in March 2016.

A fire department incident report on the day of the most recent accident said: “Upon arrival at the scene, we confirmed the incident as an RTC with two people trapped, two vehicles involved, with a car sideways.

“One victim was taken to safety and the other was extracted by firefighters and transported to LRI by land ambulance with non-life threatening injuries.”

A Leicestershire Police spokesperson said at the time: “We were called to report a collision between two vehicles at the junction of Fosse Road South and Upperton Road just after 12.30pm.

“One person – a woman – was taken to hospital as a precaution. No life-threatening or life-altering injuries were reported.

“The road reopened shortly before 2:30 p.m..”
